What is Adhik Maas (Purushottam Month)?
Adhik Maas, also called Mal Maas or Purushottam Maas, is an extra month added in the Hindu lunar calendar to balance the difference between the solar year and lunar year. It happens when there is no Sun transit (Sankranti) between one new moon and the next new moon. In simple words, if two new moons fall within one solar month, that month becomes Adhik Maas. This extra month is known as Purushottam Month because Lord Vishnu (Purushottam) is believed to have accepted and blessed this month.
Why does Adhik Maas occur?
According to astrology:
- A solar year is about 365 days
- A lunar year is about 354 days
This creates a difference of about 11 days every year.
To balance this difference, an extra month is added approximately every 32 months (around every 3 years). That extra month is called Adhik Maas.
What is done during Adhik Maas?
This month is considered highly spiritual and good for:
Worship of Lord Vishnu
Prayer, meditation, chanting, and fasting
Charity, donation, and helping others
Religious reading and devotion
People especially believe that good deeds done during this month bring special blessings.
What should be avoided?
Major auspicious ceremonies are generally avoided during Adhik Maas, such as:
- Marriage
- Housewarming (Griha Pravesh)
- Bratabandha
- Big religious ceremonies
- Foundation laying and other major celebrations
However, daily worship, regular prayers, and necessary rituals can still be performed.
Why do newly married couples avoid Mal Maas?
There is a traditional belief that during the first Adhik Maas after marriage, newly married couples should stay apart for some time. Old religious stories say this helps avoid difficulties or bad luck in family life. This is mainly a cultural and traditional practice followed in some Hindu families.
Main Message of Adhik Maas
Adhik Maas is considered a sacred time for:
- Self-improvement
- Devotion
- Charity
- Spiritual growth
- Helping others
It teaches people to focus less on material celebrations and more on inner peace and good deeds.

World Telecommunication Day
The purpose of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.
Background
In November 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society called upon the UN General Assembly to declare 17 May as World Information Society Day to focus on the importance of ICT and the wide range of issues related to the Information Society raised by WSIS. The General Assembly adopted a resolution in March 2006 stipulating that World Information Society Day shall be celebrated every year on 17 May.
Telecom history in Nepal
The first telephone line was connected to Kathmandu in 1913, and a year later, in 1914, a telephone line was connected from Kathmandu to Raxaul, India. In 1936, a trunk line was established from Kathmandu to Dhankuta.
In 1950, an exchange of 100 line telephone capacity was established in the valley for the use of the royal palace and the then-Rana family. These phones were available only to the ruling class. Only in 1962, a 300-line capacity exchange was connected to Kathmandu for public use. It was built in 1965 with a capacity of one thousand lines. In 1974, the microwave link was expanded. The digital telephone exchange was connected in 1983.
In 1995, the latest achievement of communication technology was the connection of an optical fiber network. In 1997, Birgunj (Raxaul Optical Fiber) connected directly to the Telecommunications Corporation of India. In 1999, mobile phones were first introduced in Nepal. The Internet was started in 2000. In 2003, prepaid mobiles were expanded. CDMA phone service was launched in 2005. GPRS and 3G services were launched in 2007 on the expanded mobile network across Nepal. Subsequent achievements are now witnessed by the new generation.
Society needs a person who can speak kindly, not just chat, not only post sharing, but also a friend who shares pain and happiness, not just a Facebook or YouTube page, but also a place where everyone can sit and have tea and talk. Let Telecommunication Day recognize these dimensions of humanity.
World Hypertension Day
विश्व उच्च रक्तचाप दिवस
Exclusive audio
Background:
World Hypertension Day 2026 Every year, on May 17, World Hypertension Day is observed in order to educate the public and create awareness on high blood pressure and hypertension. This year, the theme of World Hypertension Day is ‘Measure your blood pressure accurately, control it, live longer’. Hypertension, usually caused by stress and lack of a disciplinary life, can lead to a range of disorders such as stroke, heart diseases, kidney diseases and dementia.
Observed since:
Hypertension, this day was first observed in 2005. Changing lifestyles, packaged foods, processed foods, busy lifestyles, and the multiplication of desires and the competition for unwanted wealth and progress are making people hypertensive. We all need to be vigilant.
We are all at risk of hypertension.
Hypertension is a silent but frightening health problem of modern society, it is necessary to pay attention to. There is a need for a turn of peace and equality in these generations that have forgotten to live a life of gain and loss. It is important to keep blood pressure in the right place, usually, the upper pressure is systolic 120 and lower diastolic 80 and now this parameter is increased till 130 and 90 as per different researches and medical articles. Is it possible to take a little time today and check your blood pressure? Remember that high blood pressure is one of the most important and dangerous causes of cardiac disease. It causes renal diseases, thyroid problems, and various neurological diseases. It is better to check the body from time to time instead of taking medicine and going to the doctor all year round, we need to be aware of this.
It is very good to stay away from smoking and alcohol, but if we can't, we can get rid of many diseases by using less, exercising daily, and engaging in sports. Daily exercise can make you feel tired and gives you a good sleep. People who work night shifts and stay up late at night are more likely to develop hypertension. Blood pressure has a fixed pressure, both high and low are harmful. Make time for yourself, bank balance may give you happiness but there is no greater happiness than health. Pay attention to diet, exercise, and rest.

For The Neelakanta Sadhashiva Mantra Prayer, the Sage Is Brahma, the Meter Is Anushtup,The God Addressed Is Neelakanta Sadhashiva, the Seed Is Brahma, the Power Is Parvati And For Complete Destruction of All My Sins, For Enhancement of Pleasant Life and Stability of Life. Span And Health, For Getting The Four Things Dharma, Prosperity, Desires And Salvation, I Am Chanting This Mantra.
Story of Lord Shiva (Neelkantha and Gosaikunda)
Neelkantha, the one who has a blue throat, I begin from here today, and this is a splendid story. Lord Shiva swallowed the Halahal poison which appeared during the Samudra Manthan, Nilkantha in the desperation of the poison went straight to holy Gosaikunda Lake in the mountains and slept there under the cold water. At an altitude over 4380 meters above sea level, Gosainkunda (Gosain means Lord and Kunda is a holy pond) is believed to have been created by the Trisul of Lord Shiva.
To get the elixir from the ocean, the Samundra Manthan or the churning process was on its go, a lot of things came out of the ocean which included gold, silvers, gems, goddesses Luxmi, Dhawantari, and many more. Among all those, deadly Halahal poison was one among them, this was so deadly that it perished everyone who came into contact with it. Gods and demons were asphyxiated because of the effect, sooner Bramhma and Vishnu asked for help from Lord Shiva.
Upon the consumption of this poison, Lord Shiva started turning blue, alarmed by the rapidly spreading poison into Lord Shiva's body Goddesses Parwati entered Shiva's throat in the form of Mahavidya and controlled the spreading of poison confining its effect only to his throat.Hence, Neelkantha connotes that we need to control all our negative thoughts and keep working towards achieving our goals.
Gosainkunda, a place that must be visited once in a lifetime, has a tradition of taking a holy dip every year with thousands of devotees, this starts from today. The number of devotees bathing in the holy shrine of Rasuwa, Gosainkunda, is expected to increase day by day from today till the date of Dashami.
There is a religious belief that bathing, giving alms, and offering Tarpan in Gosainkunda will assist ancestors to liberate and achieve salvation. These holy dips will also assist to get rid of the sins committed for life and fulfill their desires.
