    Sorha Sradhha starts from today

    Pitri Paksha

The 16-day Pitri Paksha has a big role to play in the beginning of the Dashain, 16 days of Pitri Paksha started from today. These 16 days are the homage fortnight to ancestors, ancestor means Pitri in Sanskrit so these days are called Pitri Parksha.

Ancestors (Pitri) taken as the center of God and the ancestral homage (Pitrikarma) is taken as the center of the eternal rites. Sorha Shraddha further clarifies the height and importance of Vedic Sanatan rites. These 16 holy days are called by different names like Sohra Shraddha, Pitripaksha, Kagant, Jitiya, Mahalaya Paksha, Pitru Pokho etc.

Starting from the full moon, this aspect lasts till the day of the Aaunshi. In Pitri Paksha, it is believed that ancestors come and live in the homes of their descendants on earth. Hindus perform Pitrikarya i.e. shraddha on the death tithi of their ancestors, on the day of shraddha, there is a special bustle in the house.

    Scriptural citations of Sorha Shradhha.

Danvir Karna, who died in the battle of Mahabharata, was given gold and silver ornaments as food in heaven.

Out of curiosity as to why King Indra gave him gold, silver, etc., when he needed real food for hunger, Karna asks King Indra of heaven.

In the answer, Indra makes it clear that Danvir Karna donated only gold and silver for the rest of his life and did not donate food to his ancestors, this is why his account on heaven had no provision of real food. The legend that Karna was sent back to earth for 16 days after Indra said that he had not donated food to his ancestors in his lifetime. It is considered as the beginning of the Pitri Paksha. In Vedic Sanatan Sanskar, Pitrikarma i.e. shraddha is usually performed twice, regular shraddha is performed on the tithi of exact death and another shraddha is performed during the period of Sorha shraddhas.

    What is Shradhha?

Shraddha is one of the important deeds in Vedic Sanatan Hindu rites which is usually performed by the eldest son, if not the eldest son then other sons or brothers and even sisters of the family perform this. On the day of Sarvapitru Aunshi, the son pays homage to the fathers on both his father's and mother's side.

Participation of Daughters in Shradhha, a discourse

Based on the Hindu scriptures that the son is the path to salvation, the issue has been linked to anti-feminist and gender inequality from various angles. But the fact is, son and daughter both have their equal right, importance and different crucial roles in family and rituals. In every good deed and rite of Sanatan Dharma, the presence of the son as the doer has been given priority, but women have been given the same importance. Shraddhakarma cannot be completed without the presence of nieces and nephews. Sons and daughters are the same for ancestors and the role of daughters in Pitrikarma and ceremonies is very commendable since prehistoric time. Religion and culture have given equal place to both children. Religion does not discriminate anywhere.

Now from the concept of Pitri and their world, it is believed that there are three generations of ancestors living in this world between heaven and earth. There is a belief in this ancestral world that crossing Baitarni river will lead to heaven. It is believed that Indra is the king of the heavens and Yama is the king of the ancestral world.

    Pratipada Shradhha

Sanatana people (Pitris) who died in Pratipada tithi are offered "Shradhha Karma" today. Normally, Pratipada is a day before dwitiya but this year both tithis have collided.

May peace and happiness prevail in every family with the beginning of this year's Sorha Shraddha, may the blessings of the Pitri remain forever, may the door of heaven be opened and may the Pitris live in peace!

    International Literacy Day

    अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय साक्षरता दिवस

    Exclusive audio

    Background:

September 8, World Literacy Day. In 1965, UNESCO declared September 8 of each year as World Literacy Day. Schools, communities, and institutions around the world celebrate this day spontaneously in various ways to spread awareness for literacy.

It is everyone's responsibility to make everyone literate. From Nepal's perspective, the digital age and its utilization for digital education and awareness for literacy is still inadequate. Hand-held mobiles and home-based internet should not be just a waste of time to communicate and spend time without education and literacy.

In your opinion, what should be the first priority for improving literacy in Nepal?

In Nepal, it is important to give continuity to programs including early education because education is important for everyone, be it children or the elderly. From kharipati and dhulopati to carving letters, from blackboard and slate, from reading Ka, Kha alphabets on the chart hanging on the wall to the generation knowing the letters from the computer screen, Nepali society has witnessed a lot of transformation on its education system.

How can we make everyone literate is the question for today, whether it is by reading alphabet books or by giving them free daily reading or by creating a reading environment to take them to school, it is the responsibility of everyone to make a literate society, literate nation, and a literate world. ‘Siksha Dhan Sarvapradhanam’ ‘शिक्षा धनं सर्वप्रधानम"

Meaning: Education is the supreme wealth.

    World Physiotherapy Day

    विश्व फिजियोथेरापी दिवस

    Exclusive audio

    Background:

Various muscular problems, bone problems, and stiffness can distract a person from this skill and practice of mobility, maintaining the same mobility requires the skill and study of physiotherapists. With this need in mind, World Physiotherapy Day is celebrated on September 8 every year with various programs.

World Physical Therapy Day is on 8th September every year. The day is an opportunity for physiotherapists from all over the world to raise awareness about the crucial contribution the profession makes to keeping people well, mobile and independent.

In 1813, Swiss gymnast Henrik Ligan opened the Royal Institute of Gymnastics. The organization was the first in the world to introduce massages, remedial exercises, and other exercises for mobility and pain relief.

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy was opened in Britain in 1894, and the first college of physiotherapy was at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC. A physiotherapy branch was started in this hospital during the First World War.

    History of physiotherapy in Nepal

In Nepal, the history of physiotherapy can be traced back to a few decades ago when some private hospitals formally started this as a new medical system. In the 1980s, physiotherapy was practiced through military hospitals, leprosy prevention therapies, and some trained health workers from India. In 1983, the IOM formally recognized physiotherapy as a 30-month post-SLC course.

In this process, we have a history of about 50 people being trained till 1990, but again in 1990, physiotherapy teaching was stopped in Nepal. However, there were various informal trainings and on-the-job trainings. Since 2002, Dhulikhel Medical Institute has formally started physiotherapy. Since then, the number of courses and service providers has been increasing in Nepal.

After the armed conflict, after 2063 BS, physiotherapy was used extensively in military camps and hospitals for the rehabilitation and recuperation of wounded and injured soldiers. NEPTA is a professional association of Nepali physiotherapists. Physiotherapy is the backbone of treatment in itself, and today back and neck pain has become the most common and recurring pain due to a more hectic lifestyle and constant use of computers and mobiles, isn't it?

World Physiotherapy Day 2025 "Healthy Ageing and Preventing Falls" The theme focuses on the importance of staying active and strong as we age and highlights how physiotherapy plays a key role in preventing falls, which are one of the biggest health risks for older adults.
