The Newar community celebrates Chathā: Puja on the fourth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Bhadra (Ganesh Chaturthi). On this day, worship is performed at night without looking at the moon, as there is a legend connecting Lord Ganesh and the Moon. According to Newar belief, this day is also regarded as the birthday of Ganesh, and worship performed on this occasion is believed to free devotees from Chandra Dosha (the moon’s curse) and the stigma of false accusations or theft. The festival is generally celebrated within the family (Chakhaḥ), and worship is offered to the Moon, Ganesh, and the thief-god (Khū: Dyaḥ / Indra). Special offerings include lotus leaves decorated with nine types of grains and seeds, fruits, and flowers such as Karveer and Mohani. A unique custom of the day is eating “Halimali” (a mix of roasted grains and pulses). The weather on Chathā: is also believed to predict the weather during Dashain.

    • Name & Type: Known as Chathā: in Nepal Bhasa; celebrated only with family, hence called Chakhaḥ.
    • Time: Observed only at night on Bhadra Shukla Chaturthi.
    • Legends:

-The Moon mocked Ganesh → Ganesh cursed him → anyone who looks at the Moon on this night will be falsely accused of theft.

-On this same day, Krishna once saw the Moon and was falsely accused of stealing the Syamantaka jewel.

-Indra, regarded as Khū: Dyaḥ (the thief-god), is also worshipped on this occasion.

    • Offerings: Karveer flowers, Mohani flowers, Laxmi flowers, and lotus leaves with nine types of grains and seeds (corn, black soybeans, peas, wheat, kidney beans, peach seeds, etc.).
    • Special Ganesh Worship: A red-colored Ganesh with a lion as the vehicle and only one tusk is worshipped.
    • Special Tradition: Eating Halimali (roasted grains and pulses) on this day.
    • Other Beliefs:

-If it rains on Chathā:, Dashain will also be rainy; if the weather is clear, Dashain will also be clear.

-Puja begins only after dogs bark, symbolizing the arrival of the thief-god.

    Rastriya Dharma Sava Diwas, Nepal

Background of Rastriya Dharmasava in Nepal

Every year since 2066 BS, it is customary to celebrate the National Dharmasabha Day on the 9th of Bhadra every year. Taking you back to Nepal about 100 years ago, when Chandrashamser was the Prime Minister of Nepal. The first Dharmasabha was held in BS 1961 when Chandrashamser invited all the scholars and pundits to hold a week-long Dharmasabha. After that Dharmasabha, the official and formal Bikram Samvat of Nepal took place.

Modern Nepal and its context to dharma Sava

Nepal, full of Sanatan rites and traditions, is a country united in diversity and will build a common ground to protect all religions, communities, and traditions through the Dharmasabha. In 2066 BS, the then government of Nepal tried to take three insensitive decisions. It was a government step to make it a year of only 11 months and establish AD as a formal Nepali calendar. Besides, the decision to have a Nepali Bhatt priest in Pashupati was also taken at that time.

Vikram Samvat itself is multi-faced, the scientific aspect and features of Nepal Samvat and AD. Both are integrated in this ancient Vikram Sambat, not only scientific but also a link to Nepali identity. After that insensitive decisions of the communists led goverment, the Dharmasabha was formally registered for the protection of Nepali tradition. Guru Madhav Bhattarai also told Hamro Patro that it is customary to celebrate the National Dharmasabha every year on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi after Teej.

In this way, for the protection of Vedic Sanatan practice, identity, Vedic customs, and other religions and cultures in Nepali culture, the Dharmasabha also works closely with the Panchang Nirnayak Samiti, including the inclusion of festivals and dates in the annual calendar. Every year, the Dharmasabha Committee holds a Pandit Conference and protects and promotes the rules and regulations, including dates and festivals.

May this year's Dharmasabha Day take a pioneering step in preserving the identity, faith, traditions, and customs of Nepalis in the years to come? Mobile companion, a synonym of Nepalijan, Hamro Patro wishes Dharmasabha Day to all its users.
