    Special Audio

Every year on October 11, Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) Day is celebrated with various programs. On this occasion, there is a strong presence of NRNs from different countries, along with the association’s president and other officials. This day is observed not only within Nepal but also by Nepali communities abroad in their own ways.

Who is a Non-Resident Nepali (NRN)?

An NRN refers to a Nepali citizen who, carrying a Nepali passport, resides in another country for six months or more for employment, settlement, or education. It also includes those whose ancestral roots are in Nepal but who have obtained foreign citizenship due to circumstances, as well as former Nepali citizens who have accepted foreign nationality. The NRN Act of 2007 clearly states that citizens of Nepali origin residing in SAARC countries, long-term students abroad, and employees working under the Nepal Government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs are not included as NRNs.

How do Non-Resident Nepalis living abroad primarily contribute to the development of Nepal?

Whether it is the Hindu festival of Dashain, Christmas of Christians, the turkey eaten during Thanksgiving, or the goats and sheep sacrificed during Muslims’ Eid al-Adha (Bakra Eid)—human civilization has carried forward the tradition of meat consumption rooted in religion and culture, a fact we have continued to follow.

The theme for the NRN 2025 was "Right of NRNs, Foundation of Nation's Prosperity" emphasizes that protecting the rights of Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) is key to Nepal’s growth. It highlights that when NRNs are supported, respected, and empowered, their contributions—through investment, skills, and knowledge—become a strong foundation for the country’s economic and social development.

Hamro Patro - Connecting Nepali Communities
Hamro Patro is one of the first Nepali app to include Nepali Patro, launched in 2010. We started with a Nepali Calendar mobile app to help Nepalese living abroad stay in touch with Nepalese festivals and important dates in Nepali calendar year. Later on, to cater to the people who couldn’t type in Nepali using fonts like Preeti, Ganesh and even Nepali Unicode, we built nepali mobile keyboard called Hamro Nepali keyboard.
