Adhikamas and Matsya Narayan Mela ends | World Food Day
ॐ
रामाय रामचन्द्राय रामभद्राय वेधसे।
रघुनाथाय नाथाय सीतायाः पतये नमः॥
Heartfelt obeisance to Lord Rama, Ramabhadra, Ramachandra, Lord of all Vedas, and Lord Rama of Sita Mata, the leader of Raghu dynasty. This year's Divine Purushottam Mass is officially starting today, let's talk in this periphery.
The convoy of the Dashain, which should have started with the conclusion of the Pitri Paksha, have been pushed to one month this year, it's stretched till Kartik month. According to Bhavishya Purana, Lord Krishna Himself has mentioned that those who fast for Adhika Mass, give alms, and keep the body and soul pure will get many outcomes, sins, and sufferings will be redeemed. The Padma Purana also combines Adhikamas and Shri Krishna and says in his own words that it is necessary for every human being to give alms, pilgrimages, and light lamps in Adhikamas.
What is Malamas or Adhikamass?
The month calculated according to the motion of the sun is called the solar and the date calculated according to the motion of the moon is called the lunar. The solar month usually lasts 29 to 32 days, while the lunar month lasts 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes, and 24 seconds from one full moon to another. Generally, dates/ Tithis can be understood as lunar months and days as solar months. Thus, in the calculation of the solar month, there is a year of 365 days, and in the calculation of the lunar month, there is a year of 354 days. Thus each year the lunar month is 11 days later than the solar month and in 3 years there are 33 days differentiating between the lunar month and the solar month which is reconciled with Adhikamas or Malamas.
Once Malamas or Adhikamass arrives, it will not come for 3 years. Due to the Adhikamass in September 2020 AD, the festivals including Dashain and Tihar have been stretched for next month.
MatsyaNarayan Mela begins
During the Malmas period, there is a tradition of worshiping Narayan and reciting Purushottam Mahatmya at the Matsyanarayana Temple, 4 km south of Kirtipur. Matsyanarayana is also known as Machhenarayan. It is also mentioned in the scriptures that worshiping Lord Narayana destroys all sins.
The temple, which has an artistic entrance of a gold-plated eagle, has a four-foot-tall statue with a conch and a Chakra in its hand, a Gadha (Ancient weapon), and a lotus, revealed from the mouth of a fish. It is mentioned in the Puranas that when Vishnu took ten incarnations, he first assumed the body of a fish and protected the Vedas by functioning as a buoy in the sea during the apocalypse.
Devotees with the intention of visiting Char Narayan go to visit the Matsyanarayana temple especially during Malamass. Although pilgrimages and festivals have been halted this year due to the Corona catastrophe, this year's pilgrimages and darshans have been postponed due to infection and transmission risks. It is customary to hold the Purushotam Aradhanatmak Sarvasiddhi Shrimadbhagavat Mahayagya at the Matsyanarayana Temple however, for this year no official statements are heard from the organizer.
The Matsyanarayan Mela is held at the interval of 2 years, 8 months, and 24 days from the beginning of Malmas Purushotammas for one month. Everyone is a friend, everyone should be free from disease, everyone should be able to witness the auspicious event, and no one should have to suffer.
Stay safe
World Food Day
On October 16, 2020, the world is again celebrating World Food Day as in other years, but in a different context and in a different way. The day has come for human civilization to return to its basic needs due to the horrors of Covid 19 and the changes it has brought. Today is a very important day to teach the generation which is entirely just connected to the keyboard and WiFi about the importance of soil and crops and the relationship between the roots of the plants, soil, and the food on their table.
Filled bhakari, sacks of rice, wheat, millet, and corn hanging on the railings, these and many other grains and foodstuffs are found in Nepali homes and villages. It should be considered as the grace of Pashupati Nath, till now in Nepali society and Nepali soil, by the grace of Machhindranath, greenery is being maintained with drops of water, and hunger is addressed.
Two decades ago, when more than 80 percent of the total population was engaged in agriculture, most of the households in Nepal still make a living by digging up soil and agriculture. It is estimated that more than 60 percent of the Nepali population is still, directly and indirectly, involved in agriculture. If we look at the family profession of many of us, we find that one or two generations ago there is a substantial trace of the farming profession.
The gradual cessation of production of locally grown crops, the use of highly toxic pesticides to reduce the capacity of productive soils and the gradual disappearance of indigenous species are the challenges of food management in the 21st century. Nepal commenced its modern development but abandoned its participatory social engagement into agriculture and this why today such a fertile Nepal has been importing foods from foreign markets. Today is also the day when Nepali must understand that agriculture is the most glamorous and responsible profession to undertake and lucrative also. Especially in Nepal, we are still not able to engage in commercial agriculture and the main reasons for this are the inability to encourage and attract students in agricultural education, this could be because of the lack of actions in government policymaking or many other reasons.
In the 1960s, Nepal was one of the sixth largest exporters of rice in the world, but agriculture in Nepal has been declining and today Nepal is at the peak of importing many agricultural products including rice.
If we compare the city of 50 years ago with the city of today, only the mouths of food grow more than the hands that grow, this is a problem for food crisis management. World Food Day is also important to make the world, which enjoys technology, communication, and physical infrastructure, aware of future problems due to declining investment and enthusiasm for slow food production. According to a statistic, by 2025, due to food shortage in the world, large corporations in developed countries have been claiming to invest in the vacant lands of developing countries. In the post COVID era, food security and sovereignty is more important and vital than ever before. Therefore, the slogan of this World Food Day 2020 is Grow, Nourish, and Sustain together.
Every year on October 16, World Food Day is celebrated to fight the food crisis and hunger around the world. World Food and Agriculture Organization F.A.O. According to, the biggest challenge posed by climate change is the food crisis. On the other hand, the population of the earth is increasing day by day, and to bring this proportion of the growing population towards food security, it is necessary to make the traditional methods of agriculture more productive and commercialized by adapting to climate change. Today's need is to be able to produce as much as possible by cultivating seasonal and non-seasonal crops even on a small land and to use food sparingly.
The movement of middlemen between farmers and consumers should be reduced and transparent relations should be maintained between producers and consumers. Land distribution should be productive, irrigation facilities should be simple and market management should be fair. Let's remember, food is the essence of our survival and the bedrock of our culture and communities.
Happy World Food Day everyone!
