    World Environment Day

World Environment Day 2023 is the biggest international day for the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and held annually since 1974, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach. It is celebrated by millions of people across the world.

Theme 2023 – Beat the plastic pollution
The theme for World Environment Day on 5 June 2023 will focus on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution. The world is being inundated by plastic. More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year, half of which is designed to be used only once.

    Nepal in environment protection
Nepal has implemented several policies and initiatives to promote environmental protection and sustainable development. Here are some key policies and measures:

National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP): The NBSAP aims to conserve Nepal's biodiversity and ensure its sustainable use. It focuses on the conservation of ecosystems, endangered species, and genetic resources. The plan emphasizes community participation, sustainable livelihoods, and the integration of biodiversity conservation into sectoral policies and programs.

Climate Change Policy: Nepal has formulated the Climate Change Policy, which addresses climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. The policy focuses on promoting climate-resilient development, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing adaptive capacity through mainstreaming climate change considerations into various sectors.

Forest Policy and Community Forestry Program: The Forest Policy emphasizes sustainable forest management, conservation, and community participation. The Community Forestry Program involves the transfer of forest management rights to local communities, empowering them to protect and manage forests sustainably. This program has been successful in reducing deforestation and improving forest cover.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Act: The EIA Act requires environmental impact assessments to be conducted for development projects that may have significant environmental consequences. It ensures that potential environmental impacts are identified, assessed, and mitigated during project planning and implementation.

Solid Waste Management Act: The Solid Waste Management Act focuses on improving waste management practices and reducing waste generation. It mandates the segregation, recycling, and proper disposal of waste. The act also encourages public awareness and participation in waste management activities.

Renewable Energy Promotion Policy: Nepal has a Renewable Energy Promotion Policy that aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the country's energy mix. The policy provides incentives and support for the development of renewable energy projects, such as hydropower, solar, wind, and biomass.

National Water Plan: The National Water Plan focuses on integrated water resources management, water conservation, and equitable water allocation. It aims to address water-related challenges, such as water scarcity, pollution, and climate change impacts.

Plastic Bag Regulation: Nepal has implemented a ban on the production, import, sale, and use of plastic bags. This regulation aims to reduce plastic pollution and promote the use of eco-friendly alternatives.

These policies and initiatives demonstrate Nepal's commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. However, effective implementation, monitoring, and enforcement remain crucial to ensure their success and achieve long-term environmental sustainability.

    Meaningful wishes on this day.

Hamro Patro - Connecting Nepali Communities
Hamro Patro is one of the first Nepali app to include Nepali Patro, launched in 2010. We started with a Nepali Calendar mobile app to help Nepalese living abroad stay in touch with Nepalese festivals and important dates in Nepali calendar year. Later on, to cater to the people who couldn’t type in Nepali using fonts like Preeti, Ganesh and even Nepali Unicode, we built nepali mobile keyboard called Hamro Nepali keyboard.
